MUSIC
While many fine churches have adopted more contemporary musical styles and methods
of facilitating congregational singing, Emory Presbyterian Church has chosen to continue to
celebrate the rich legacy represented by the 1990 Presbyterian Hymnal. However, this
tradition is occasionally supplemented with African chants, Taize prayer refrains, and older
Gospel hymnody. While the focus of each worship is on our communal music-making, the chancel
choir weekly offers anthems ranging in style from Renaissance motets and Baroque oratorio
choruses to spirituals and hymn arrangements.
Our Director of Music, Elise Sparks, leads us in song and directs our chancel choir.
Choirs
There is a place for voices of all ages in the music ensembles of this church.
The Chancel Choir rehearses Wednesday from 7:30 to 9:00 pm (7:45 to 9:15 when there is an outside speaker at the Wednesday program).
The Youth Choir practices informally during other youth activities.
The Children's Choir practices songs as a part of Worship Readiness class during the Sunday service.
In September they performed a musical, Moses and the Freedom Fanatics, the
culmination of a week of music day camp at the church.
In addition to the offerings of these
choirs, we enjoy the various gifts of individual church members - trumpet, vocal solos, sign language, percussion.
Handbells
The youth and adult handbell groups play for occasional worship services, as well as special services during
the church year. Another ringer is always welcome to join us!
See Elise about adult handbells and Deedra about youth handbells.
Music Camp
We attend Music and the Liturgical Arts in Worship Week
at Lake Junaluska. This camp is for children, youth, adults, and handbells.
